Jose Mourinho could be without up to eight defenders for Manchester United’s crucial clash with Arsenal at Old Trafford on Wednesday night, according to the Telegraph‘s James Ducker.
Victor Lindelof, Eric Bailly, Chris Smalling and Marcos Rojo were all declared not fit enough to start against Southampton on Saturday.
Phil Jones, the only fit central defender, picked up a knock during the game along with Luke Shaw, forced off in the second half, while Ashley Young‘s fifth yellow card of the season rules him out of the Arsenal game.
According to Ducker, Mourinho could well be without a total of eight defenders for his team’s meeting with Unai Emery’s side this week.
The 55-year-old will desperately hope to see Chris Smalling and Eric Bailly, whose injuries he described as minor ahead of drawing with Southampton, return to give him something of a centre-back partnership and avoid using Scott McTominay and Nemanja Matic, which would end terribly up against Pierre-Emerik Aubameyang.
Perhaps the injury crisis paves the way for Diogo Dalot, who came on as a substitute over the weekend, to receive his full Premier League debut at Old Trafford, with Matteo Darmian the likely candidate to fill the left-back role.
