Jose Mourinho will expect some of his players to play through injuries as he battles an increasingly chaotic injury crisis ahead of Manchester United’s meeting with Arsenal in the Premier League.
The 55-year-old noted that Chris Smalling and Eric Bailly had both suffered minor injuries ahead of the 2-2 draw with Southampton over the weekend. He will expect at least one of them to ‘make themselves fit’, as coaches often like to say.
Luke Shaw and Phil Jones both sustained injuries at Southampton, while fitness doubts remain over the likes of Matteo Darmian and Antonio Valencia. Ashley Young is suspended and Victor Lindelof, as we know, is sidelined until Christmas.
With all that in mind, here is what Wednesday’s team may look like, with Darmian and Smalling two players likely to push through the pain and play in what is a massive game for Man United’s top four ambitions.
It may well be that Nemanja Matic and Scott McTominay start in central defence, paving the way for a truly painful evening of football. On the positive side, however, the injury crisis perfectly lays the platform for Diogo Dalot to make his full Premier League debut after coming off the bench at Saint Mary’s over the weekend.
