Unai Emery has named the three players at Arsenal who he believes possess the traits to become potential Arsenal captain (via Arsenal.com).
Arsenal haven’t had much success with their club captains in the last decade but many were hoping for change over the summer.
Robin Van Persie, Cesc Fabregas and Thomas Vermaelen all left and both Per Mertesacker and Mikel Arteta suffered injury problems when they were handed the armband.
New head coach Unai Emery said last month that Laurent Koscielny would remain his “first captain” but that he wants “five captains” in the side.
After the match at the weekend, Emery was quizzed over whether he thinks he has found those players and named a few names.
“I am giving you and am giving the players this position but not close. Like I am telling you, one is Koscielny but he’s injured,” Emery said.
“Then I am thinking of five more captains. I am thinking about Petr [Cech], Aaron [Ramsey] and Mesut [Ozil]. Then I need to find one or two more.”
Ozil was the man who wore the armband during the 5-1 victory over Paris Saint-Germain but there are clear doubts about his suitability to the role. Aaron Ramsey would be a leading candidate for the role but that all depends on whether he stays at the club. Nacho Monreal could also be in contention.
