Manchester United have identified Barcelona defender Yerry Mina as an alternative centre-back target should the deal for Harry Maguire fall through, according to reports from Spain.
Jose Mourinho’s pursuit of a new centre-back is no secret, with Maguire – who will cost around £70m to prize away from Leicester City – and Toby Alderweireld the two players targeted by the Portuguese in the latter stages of the window.
But Mina, the standout player for Colombia at the World Cup, has also emerged as a potential option for Man United as the transfer deadline draws nearer.
And according to Spanish media outlet SPORT, Man United have identified Mina, who is deemed surplus to requirements at Barcelona despite his excellent World Cup, as a back-up option if a deal for Maguire fails to materialise.
Leicester City are playing hardball over Maguire and will not let their player of the year leave for anything less than around £70m – a truly crazy figure. The Englishman, although keen on moving to Old Trafford, will not push for a move away.
United’s focus, therefore, will be firmly on Alderweireld, whose financial package continues to be the main obstacle blocking a transfer going through. But the notion that he can be bought for just £25m next summer will surely cajole Daniel Levy into finally yielding to a deal with Ed Woodward before the window shuts.
