Manchester United fan favourite Rio Ferdinand has weighed in on the debate over Romelu Lukaku and Marcus Rashford, claiming the former doesn’t offer enough and the latter needs minutes.
The two strikers have become a topic of discussion of late after the Belgian’s recent poor form and the Englishman’s task of replacing him.
Fans have called for Lukaku to be dropped and finally got their wish by Rashford couldn’t do enough to convince Jose Mourinho to not drop him for the clash against Bournemouth.
The academy product did come off the bench to score the eventual winner and Ferdinand believes he needs more starts to nurture his talent.
Romelu meanwhile looks as though he could face a real test for his spot in the starting XI once he returns from injury with even Alexis Sanchez getting the nod up front.
According to TEAMtalk, Rio said to BT Sport: “Marcus Rashford is a great talent who needs to be nurtured. Mourinho has given him opportunities, he’s played many, many minutes.
“But I believe he is at an age now where he will be sitting there [and] if he’s not starting, he’ll be disappointed.
“He’s gone from being that player who’s been brought into the squad, who’s happy to come off the bench and make that impact.
“He’s now at a place where in his own mind he’s thinking ‘I should be starting here’ and when he doesn’t, that’s a deflator.
“I don’t think he’s at the point in his career where he should say he’s a definite No.9 down the middle.
“But I do think in a young player’s development… you’ve seen it with top players with Wayne Rooney on the left wing at times for Man Utd, [Cristiano] Ronaldo on the wing and up front. Players move about at a young age, then find their position.
“You look at Lukaku. Lukaku’s goalscoring record is up there, it’s fantastic, he scores goals. But in the best teams you need more than that.
“You need to be able to bring other people into play, you need to be able to complement people in your team, things have to be set up off you.
“At the moment, in a Man Utd shirt, some things break down in Lukaku. And that affects other players in the team, like [Paul] Pogba and [Jesse] Lingard, who want to play off people.”
Although Romelu isn’t the most complete forward, it could be argued his all round play has improved tremendously since he’s arrived at the club.
Guaranteed it doesn’t show at the moment but once he’s in form again fans will get off his back once again and recognise the tremendous striker he is.
The former Everton man can grab 30 goals a season easily and if he’s playing in a full strength, peak side then who knows how many more he can grab.
