Jose Mourinho is set to be told he has £75 million to spend in the January transfer window to try and improve Manchester United’s defence.
The Metro reports that Mourinho will meet with Man United’s executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward on Thursday evening before the Reds travel down south to face AFC Bournemouth on Saturday lunchtime.
Woodward and the United boss were scheduled to meet to discuss funds for the January transfer window last week but that meeting was postponed. That reportedly frustrated Mourinho a great deal, but he could be set for more frustration.
According to The Metro, Woodward will hand Mourinho a £75 million budget for January. The United boss could therefore be forced to sell a couple of players if he is to have bring in the reinforcements he wants to the club.
It had been thought that United would target a centre-back and a right-back. The Reds signed 19-year-old Diogo Dalot from Benfica in the summer and the right-back has looked a promising prospect but clearly Mourinho believes he isn’t yet ready to be the first choice. Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young are both poor options.
Meanwhile, Mourinho has reportedly set his sights on a Serie A defender with Alessio Romagnoli of AC Milan, Milan Skriniar of Inter Milan and Fiorentina’s Nikola Milenkovic all linked.
Yet all three of those central defenders would cost in excess of £50m, leaving Mourinho with minimal funds of a right-back.
That could mean he looks to sell a couple of squad players to raise the transfer and wage funds to buy a new man on the right flank.
