Manchester City welcome Manchester United to the Etihad Stadium on Sunday aiming to maintain their place at the top of the Premier League.
City head into the weekend with a two point advantage over Chelsea and Liverpool, and they will be eager to extend their 11 game unbeaten run in all competitions.
Pep Guardiola’s side are nine points in front of United and a victory this weekend would be huge blow to their local rivals’ hopes of joining the title race.
City have had an excellent week, smashing six goals past Huddersfield Town in the league and repeating the trick with another six in the Champions League against Shakhtar Donetsk.
However, those results were overshadowed by United’s superb victory at Juventus on Wednesday. Cristiano Ronaldo’s exquisite volley gave Juve the lead, but Juan Mata’s free-kick and an Alex Sandro own goal gave the Red Devils a 2-1 win against one of the favourites to win Europe’s top prize.
Despite that result United are unfancied by the bookmakers this weekend, with the home side long odds-on to pick up three points at the Etihad.
Guardiola has almost a full squad to choose from, with only Kevin De Bruyne and Claudio Bravo ruled out of the game.
Romelu Lukaku is hoping to be fit for United after missing the club’s last three matches. He was dropped for United’s 2-1 victory over Everton at the end of last month, before missing the Bournemouth and Juventus games with a hamstring injury.
However, he will take part in training on Friday and Saturday with a view to being recalled to the squad for the City clash. Diogo Dalot and Antonio Valencia missed the win in Italy and are unlikely to be involved this weekend.
City haven’t lost to a side outside of the top four in their last 53 matches, but they still lag behind United in the derby stakes.
The Red Devils have won 21 and drawn eight of their 42 Premier League meetings and lave lost just two of their last eight matches in all competitions.
The ran out 3-2 winners on their last visit to the Etihad back in April, recovering from two goals down to seal the three points and delay City’s coronation as champions.
United’s victory at Juventus showed that they can compete with Europe’s top teams and they are more than capable of going to the Etihad and recording a win.
