Jose Mourinho is set to see his targets vetoed by the Manchester United board in the January transfer window.
The Portuguese manager has been critical of his own board in the last few months, once describing himself as ‘head coach’ rather than ‘manager’ and ESPN FC now reports that the Man United executives could veto the boss’s January targets.
Mourinho wants to spend more money in January, having already splashed £300 million on a failing United side. The board, however, will stop any pursuit of players who would not be in the long-term interests of the club.
That was reportedly also the case in the summer transfer window, with ESPN suggesting that the United board were “reluctant” to chase Bayern Munich defender Jerome Boateng because of his injury record and age. Toby Alderweireld was also seen as a main target but the Tottenham Hotspur centre-back was deemed too old.
Mourinho has made a number of thinly-veiled comments about transfers at United. That included recent praise of Juventus, who United faced in the UEFA Champions League group stages last week at Old Trafford.
There have been significant suggestions that United are looking to create a new role at board level to ensure a smoother, more effective and longer-term transfer strategy.
While such thinking is good in some senses, ignoring the vital need for an experienced central defender would be wrong. It shouldn’t always be the case that United focus on young players to the detriment of the team.
