Romelu Lukaku is in “atrocious” form for Manchester United at the moment, according to former-Red Paul Ince.
The Belgian striker had a solid first season the club, netting 27 goals in all competitions. He’s not on a goal drought, as such, this campaign, but his movement has been poor.
Lukaku looked incredibly static in a dull 0-0 draw against struggling La Liga side Valencia in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday night.
He was much-criticised for his performance. A static striker leaves the midfield struggling as there are so few balls to play. Young left-forward Marcus Rashford was moving much more, and involved in the match far more.
“Romelu Lukaku has been atrocious, against Valencia he was terrible to watch,” Ince told Paddy Power.
“His scoring record is phenomenal, and he’s evidently talented, but he must contribute more.
“When you look at what someone like Sergio Aguero does for Man City – it doesn’t compare. He contributes to all aspects of the game.
“Lukaku has to have the ball right in front of him, and even then, he’s missing clear chances.”
It’s not just movement that’s been the problem with Lukaku. When he has got chances, as Ince says, he’s missing them.
Against Valencia, he was handed few chances. One was a header from an unmarked position in the box, but he couldn’t keep it down.
He’s missed easy one-on-one chances against Brighton, Burnley and an open goal against Tottenham Hotspur. It’s partly down to an unwillingness to finish chances early, leading him to take too many touches at points.
Lukaku has got to improve, otherwise Mourinho will have no choice but to drop him.
