Rio Ferdinand has lamented the lack of identity currently at Manchester United under manager Jose Mourinho.
The Portuguese coach has come under significant pressure in recent weeks after Man United made their worst ever start to a Premier League season in the two-and-a-half decades of the competition.
Mourinho saw his side concede twice in the opening 10 minutes at Old Trafford against Newcastle United on Saturday evening, but his substitutions and tactical tweaks allowed the Reds to spark an epic comeback and win the game 3-2.
Once the emotion had died down about the result and the late winner from Alexis Sanchez, many quickly conceded that it simply papered over the cracks at United.
Ferdinand explained to BT Sport that a major problem with United is that no one really knows what their style of play is.
“Where is the Manchester United identity?” the former-United defender asked on BT Sport’s coverage of the game.
“Man City play with width and Liverpool attack through their front three, and these are the sides United are trying to catch.
“If things do not go well for Man United, they bring Marouane Fellaini on and lump it up to him. I don’t see the ball going into Paul Pogba and that being a trigger for players to move off.”
What United’s Plan B is, is obvious as Ferdinand says: bring Fellaini on and pump long balls up. However, quite what is Plan A is a mystery. United appear to wait for chances to present themselves rather than penetrate sides and create chances themselves.
