Romelu Lukaku has revealed how Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho reacted to his side’s epic 3-2 win against Newcastle United on Saturday evening.
The Reds conceded two goals within the first 10 minutes in a shocking first-half. The terrible display followed rumours the day before that Mourinho was to be sacked as Man United manager regardless of the result against the Magpies.
While United denied such reports, it looked like a possibility after those two goals, with the team heading to a fifth consecutive game without a win.
However, second half goals from Juan Mata, Anthony Martial and Alexis Sanchez secured a superb come back for Mourinho’s side and although it’s only papering over the cracks, it was a vital lifeline for the manager.
Lukaku, who had a poor game himself, revealed that Mourinho’s reaction in the dressing room was limited afterwards at Old Trafford.
“Today we won, now we have two games after this international break and we can hopefully build,” Lukaku told PLP.
“[Jose Mourinho] seemed quite positive [in the dressing room after the game] but didn’t say too much. [You] don’t always need to point at manager, he gives us the plan if we don’t do it we are in trouble.”
United have had a woeful start to the campaign but Saturday’s win was an important one. It could prove to be a season-defining one even though that seems unlikely.
It’s the responsibility of the players and the coaches to ensure United take full advantage of such a win, one that was vitally needed to pull the club out of a run of terrible results.
