Luke Shaw is set to be forced to pull out of international duty with England after suffering a knock in Manchester United’s 3-2 victory against Newcastle United on Saturday evening.
The left-back has asserted himself as Man United’s number one choice in that left-back position after an excellent start to the season in which he has been named the club’s Player of the Month in both August and September.
Shaw had been enduring a tough time at United under manager Jose Mourinho. Rarely playing or being given consistent chances in the side, Shaw missed out on England’s squad for the World Cup in summer but his early season form earned him a call-up in September and once more for this month’s fixtures against Croatia and Spain.
But the United man will miss those two UEFA Nations League matches if the club’s medical staff decide he’s not fit.
The England squad are set to meet up on Monday but Shaw will be assessed by United’s medical department on Sunday to make a decision.
Gareth Southgate’s side face Croatia away from home in Rijeka on Friday and then have a tough game against Spain in Sevilla.
ESPN FC are one of a number of outlets reporting that Shaw has suffered an injury, but the initial assessment is that it’s only a minor knock.
While Shaw will want to play for his country having been out of the side for some time before last month’s international break, it could be good for United to have a fully fit and rested Shaw for a difficult period for the Reds.
Jose Mourinho’s side face Chelsea, Juventus and Manchester City among others in a tough month or so.
