Manchester United are increasingly confident of securing the long-term future of young forward Anthony Martial, it is thought.
Both the London Evening Standard and ESPN FC report that Martial will commit himself to Man United soon.
He’s set to snub interest from three champions to do so. Italian Serie A winners Juventus, German Bundesliga victors Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain, the dominant team in Ligue 1, are all considering a move for Martial if the Frenchman does not sign a deal at Old Trafford.
The 22-year-old’s current contract expires at the end of the season, although United will trigger a one-year extension between now and January if negotiations are not concluded.
Although it was widely thought in the summer that Martial had no future at United due to his poor relationship with manager Jose Mourinho, he has started the season well.
He netted a brace at Stamford Bridge recently and has as many goals this season as United’s main striker Romelu Lukaku, who has played more minutes and has always been started in the central striking position. Martial, in contrast, has usually been on the left.
Mourinho has also praised Martial, and that could be an important factor given their previous fallings out.
However, one thing holding up the deal is the recent negotiations with defender Luke Shaw. United gave the Englishman a five-year deal with a massive payrise that has made him one of the most well-paid defenders in Europe.
Martial’s agent will demand similar wages, or even higher given that forwards are generally better paid.
