Former Liverpool player and manager Graeme Souness branded Anthony Martial as a “special player” following Manchester United’s 2-1 win over Everton in the Premier League.
The Frenchman went into the game full of confidence having netted a superb brace during a 2-2 draw with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge the weekend before.
And he delivered more of the same against Everton, dazzling in a first half during which he won a penalty for his team before scoring another beautiful curling goal soon after the break.
Speaking after the game, Souness remarked that Martial had the raw qualities of a truly special player.
“I think he is a very special player. I’ve always believed it,” he said. “He’s 23 in December, he’s a baby and it is really hard for us to pass comment because we don’t work with him or know him but it looks to me that he gets discouraged easily and he gets moody.”
“In terms of football, I was thinking when Pogba and Martial were being interviewed [by Sky Sports after the game], if Man Utd can get them right, what a pair they could be together given their age.
“He possesses everything – pace, power, a super technique as we’ve seen in the last few weeks of scoring goals. He’s the full package if he’s right, but I don’t know if he doesn’t want to be in Manchester or he’s fallen out with the manager in pre-season because his partner has given birth, but there is a real player in there.
“If you line them all up and say ‘who has got the most potential?’, it is him and Pogba, but it is getting them to be proper players.”
At his best, when he enters that special flush of movement on the ball, Martial is one of the Premier League’s finest.
He demonstrated once again against Everton that he is the club’s best finisher but, more importantly, he reminded the world of how he can dominate games – how, with the right service, he can pin a defence back on his own.
Martial is too good to leave out and too good to not use in the right way. Too often the play has been too slow for the Frenchman to have an effect. When the build-up is slightly sharper, giving Martial a bit more space, he is a genuine joy to watch.
