Representatives of both Manchester United and David de Gea remain confident that the Spanish goalkeeper will sign a new long-term contract at the club.
The Manchester Evening News reports that De Gea’s agents are ‘optimistic’ that a deal will be agreed to.
The 27-year-old’s current contract at Old Trafford expires at the end of the season and although there is an option for Man United to trigger a one-year automatic extension, no one would deny that it is essential De Gea’s tied down as soon as possible.
De Gea has been linked away with a move on multiple occasions and came close to leaving United for Real Madrid, the club of his home city, back in 2015. After that move broke down, he signed a new five-year deal at United.
The MEN reports that United have “never been more confident” that De Gea will extend his stay in the north of England. That seems down to two reasons.
First of all, Thibaut Courtois joined Real Madrid in a huge deal from Chelsea. That sorts the Bernabéu club’s goalkeeping situation for some years to come and it seems unlikely De Gea would go anywhere else. However, another determining factor is that De Gea’s long-term girlfriend Edurne recently moved to Manchester.
One of the reasons De Gea had wanted a move to Real Madrid in 2015 was to be closer to his family, including his girlfriend. Now, he is said to be very happy with life in Manchester.
The support of the fans, too, is a key factor, according to the MEN.
