Manchester United have launched a bid worth €60m to sign Fiorentina and Serbia defender Nikola Milenkovic in the January transfer window, according to reports from Italy.
Jose Mourinho was desperate to sign a central defender over the transfer window but Ed Woodward refused to countenance any further additions to the squad.
The 55-year-old travelled to Montenegro over the weekend to watch Milenkovic – not Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, as many suggested – feature in a 2-0 win in Podgorica.
And according to La Nazione, the local paper for Fiorentina, Man United have formalised their interest in the Serbia international with a €60m bid in the past couple of days.
Mourinho would have been furious to see Woodward, on the final day of the transfer window, explain to journalists exactly why the manager did not need a new central defender.
And he will, in turn, expect the chairman to wholeheartedly back his pursuit of Milenkovic, who is just 21, performed well at the World Cup and stands at nearly two metres tall. In other words, he fits the Mourinho profile to a tee.
Then again, with so much uncertainty at the club and both Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly serving as examples of Mourinho centre backs failing to work out at Old Trafford, the board may well refuse to go through with moving for Milenkovic.
