France manager Didier Deschamps has insisted that reports of a strained relationship between Paul Pogba and his manager at Manchester United, Jose Mourinho, are greatly exaggerated.
Deschamps guided his country to World Cup glory in the summer in Russia and Pogba was a key part of the side, scoring in the final against Croatia.
Many have argued that Deschamps knows how to get Pogba to play at his best while Mourinho does not. The French coach has always lent his support to Mourinho and Pogba, though, and did so again recently.
“I think it’s exaggerated,” Deschamps said, when asked about suggestions that Mourinho and Pogba have had a massive fall-out.
“Maybe you didn’t watch their last game [the 3-2 win against Newcastle United], because I witnessed a great Paul Pogba.
“I think Jose saw the same thing as me. Some things happened and I think that, like is often the case, we make a big deal of something that isn’t.
“It’s true that there are some facts and some may have jumped to certain conclusions. When I see how Paul behaves towards the situation at his club, some may say he’s done everything he could possibly do mentally and when it comes to his individual performances, to help the club.
“There is no issue with Paul. I don’t want to be mixed up with anything and to interfere with any player’s relationship with their coach.”
Pogba and Mourinho have certainly locked horns in public on a number of occasions. The player has already indicated he could be interested in joining FC Barcelona while also subtly criticising Mourinho’s approach to United home games.
Mourinho, meanwhile, removed Pogba as vice-captain recently. It will be vital for Mourinho to sort out the situation if he’s to have further success at United.
