Olivier Giroud has confirmed that Ligue 1 side Marseille made contact over a deal to sign him from Chelsea.
Speaking to French outlet L’Equipe, the former Arsenal man says he never considered the prospect of leaving Chelsea so soon after joining.
We did not go as far as we can say, there was really a contact the year before, but nothing concrete this I had just arrived in Chelsea, it was not the case to pack up again three months later.
For me, Chelsea is the best club in England, the one that has won the most titles in the last ten years. They are where I wanted to be: so why leave?
Marseille were heavily linked with a move to sign the striker during the summer and it had been reported that contact was made.
Giroud, who has since confirmed those suggestions, opted to compete for his place at Chelsea, with Alvaro Morata struggling to impress in front of goal.
Both strikers have since been battling for the number one spot at Chelsea, but neither have been prolific in front of goal.
The latter may now fancy his chances of earning a starting spot after his late goal against Southampton, while Giroud himself also played a key role in assisting Ross Barkley.
