Carragher reveals what Rashford must do to become a first choice striker

Pundit Jamie Carragher has urged Marcus Rashford to improve his finishing after fluffing his lines twice for England in the clash against Croatia.

The youngster arguably had the best chances of the game and could’ve handed Gareth Southgate’s side all three points.

Unfortunately Rashford failed to make proper contact with his first effort while his second was saved by the opposition’s goalkeeper.

Carragher believes England’s tactics suited the Manchester United man but he unfortunately couldn’t capitalise having grabbed two goals in his past two internationals.

Marcus was otherwise bright in the match and did well to get himself in good enough positions to have those chances.

According to Tribal Football, Jamie said to Sky Sports: “The way England play, Rashford plays narrow – he’s almost like a striker.

“He’s not wide, he’s not hugging the touchline like in an orthodox 4-3-3. Southgate wants his wide players to tuck in. Rashford is almost playing like a striker and getting into striking positions.

“Unfortunately for England he’s missed the chances – he’s got to take them.”

If there’s one thing Rashford has been criticised for in the past it is his finishing.

The United academy product has the makings of a top striker with his lightening pace and dizzying dribbles but it’s his goalscoring record that needs a bit more improving before he can knock off the likes of Harry Kane or Romelu Lukaku for the starting spot.

Videos have consistently emerged of Marcus’ fantastic goals in training both for club and country yet he’s struggled to do so regularly during matches.

It could simply be a matter of time but if it doesn’t start to show when it matters then fans are right to become concerned.
