It is no coincidence that Manchester United’s two best players against Valencia were also the youngest in the starting XI.
Marcus Rashford played with a sense of anger and determination, attacking Valencia from the left with genuine precision, while Luke Shaw once again performed at a tenaciously high standard, displaying the kind of work ethic which has cemented his place in the team this season.
Others, however, looked ponderous, wracked with nerves, and even clunky at times. This is a team which desperately needs an injection of youth.
And with that in mind, here is how Man United could line up against a Newcastle United side without a win yet this season.
Implicit in United’s game under Mourinho is what can be best described as drudgery bordering on fatalism: players are performing sluggishly because of Mourinho’s methods and knowledge of that is making playing for United something of a self-fulfilling prophecy.
What Mourinho needs is players who want to prove themselves, who want to work and achieve regardless of circumstance.
That midfield, for one thing, can be notably reformed: Paul Pogba would certainly benefit from having the more technically astute pair of Fred and Andreas Pereira in the middle, while Anthony Martial replaces the miserably out-of-form Alexis Sanchez.
Further back, Diogo Dalot absolutely has to get another chance at right-back after Antonio Valencia‘s lack of speed was exposed by Valencia.
