Wayne Rooney has revealed one of the reasons why Memphis Depay failed to succeed at Manchester United.
The Dutchman is now playing for Ligue 1 side Olympique Lyonnais in France, and having some success. He netted 22 goals in 51 matches in the 2017/18 season for OL, helping them towards UEFA Champions League qualification.
However, his time at Man United was plagued by inconsistency during a time at the club of great negativity under his countryman Louis van Gaal.
Rooney, who was Memphis Depay’s captain at United, revealed that the forward’s attitude and response to being dropped by van Gaal was indicative of his failures at Old Trafford.
“He came on at Stoke away and messed up for their goal,” Rooney said, starting a story which seems to sum up Memphis at the club.
“So, Louis van Gaal made him play for the reserves the next day. I said, ‘Look, it’s a bit difficult [for you]. Just don’t come in with all your fancy stuff.’
“And he turned up for the reserve game in his Rolls-Royce, wearing a leather jacket and a cowboy hat. And I just thought, ‘What’s the point?’
“But Memphis is a lovely lad and it’s good to see things going well for him now.”
Cowboy hat or not, Rolls Royce or not, Memphis is now doing well in France. Whether he was good enough for United or not is not known, but he certainly had great talent and showed that on occasion under van Gaal.
Rooney, meanwhile, is thriving in Major League Soccer with DC United, who he has helped to rise rapidly up the table having joined when they were at the bottom of the league.
