Jose Mourinho has described Matteo Darmian as his “emergency man” at Manchester United, with the Italian having been linked with a move away in the summer.
Darmian can be utilised in both full-back positions and in central defence if needed for Man United, and Mourinho has been known to love utility players throughout his career.
He’s played very little this season and it’s unlikely he’ll do so unless United suffer a major injury crisis in defence. But Mourinho showed his trust for the former-Torino player with his comments after his side’s 2-1 victory at Vicarage Road against Watford on Saturday evening.
Commenting on Luke Shaw and Ashley Young’s situation in the left-back department, Mourinho name dropped Darmian.
“They are both doing well [Shaw and Young],” Mourinho said in the wake of the win.
“They are both different players and I think they both understand that one is a young player and the other is the experienced one and it is good for us to have these two options, plus Darmian.
“He is my emergency man, he is always ready for everything.”
It’s a good description for Darmian, who has filled that role for most of his United career. He arrived as a cheap buy from Serie A and started his time at Old Trafford in excellent form.
Injuries disrupted him slightly, but as United struggled under Louis van Gaal, so did Darmian. He hasn’t been good enough, and he’s a jack of all trades, master of none kind of players.
