Jose Mourinho has confirmed that Luke Shaw will return for Manchester United on Wednesday evening against Young Boys in the UEFA Champions League after a head injury suffered on international duty.
Shaw was absent from Man United’s match day squad for Saturday evening’s 2-1 victory against Watford at Vicarage Road having suffered a minor concussion in England’s defeat to Spain during the recent international break.
The left-back had been in superb form before that injury, having been named the club’s August Player of the Month and earned a call-up to the Three Lions squad. He and his manager, Mourinho, will be hoping that form continues now he’s back.
United kick off their Champions League campaign in the group stages on Wednesday in Switzerland against Young Boys, and Shaw will start.
“Luke Shaw plays Wednesday,” Mourinho told reporters after Saturday’s fixture.
“We can’t do it with one left-back and Ashley Young is not just a left-back, he is also a right-back.”
Young replaced Shaw in the starting line-up against Watford, but the latter’s attacking drive and penetration was missed.
Mourinho is ready to bring Shaw back after only a few days, having confirmed before the Watford game that Shaw did not have to miss out on the game because of the concussion, as is sometimes the case with head injuries and FA regulations.
“They are both doing well,” Mourinho said of Young and Shaw. “They are both different players and I think they both understand that one is a young player and the other is the experienced one and it is good for us to have these two options, plus Darmian.
“He is my emergency man, he is always ready for everything.”
It’s good to see Shaw coming back in quickly. It would be devastating if his good spell in the side was ended by an unfortunate injury.
