David de Gea showed why he is the best in the world with his performance in Manchester United’s 2-1 victory against Watford on Saturday evening, Jose Mourinho has implied.
The Spaniard made a good save in the 93rd-minute of the Reds’ win, having been beaten in the second half by a good strike from Andre Gray that put Man United under pressure late on.
De Gea is widely regarded as one of the finest in the world, and his ability to produce superb saves during a quiet game is partly behind that.
The United man had had very little to do all game at Vicarage Road, but reacted well to deny Watford a late equaliser.
“That is the reason why he is the best,” Mourinho enthused.
“That is why he is Manchester United’s goalkeeper and when you are the goalkeeper of a big team, even if you don’t touch the ball for the whole game you have to be decisive.”
It’s one of De Gea’s best qualities, and it’s lucky it is. As United goalkeeper, it could be easy to switch off.
But Mourinho’s team are often guilty of allowing their opponents chances and opportunities to get back into the game late on. They do by sitting back and trying to shut up shop, even though it lends itself to more chances for the opposition.
De Gea is always ready to be called into action, though, and has saved United on countless occasions. Without him, the club would certainly have suffered far worse finishes in the last few seasons.
