Jose Mourinho has outlined his intention to tie a number of players down to new contracts at Manchester United, including Luke Shaw.
The Portuguese manager hailed Juan Mata and Ander Herrera, too, despite the Spanish pairing playing little at the start of this season and rarely being first-team regulars.
David de Gea and Ashley Young were all discussed. Mourinho is keen to give new contracts to all those with deals expiring at the end of the season.
Mourinho pulled the example of last season where midfielder Marouane Fellaini looked set to leave the club but signed a new deal to keep him at Old Trafford despite wide-ranging interest from Turkey, Spain and other Premier League clubs.
“I hope they will stay,” Mourinho said of Shaw, Mata, Herrera and Young when asked of their futures.
“We had a similar conversation last season about Marouane Fellaini and I was always saying, ‘I hope he stays, I believe he will stay,’ and I say the same thing – I hope they stay.”
Mourinho referenced De Gea, too. The Spain number one has been reportedly close to a new deal for quite some time, but many outlets have claimed in recent weeks that he is demanding to be paid as much as the highest-paid outfielders at the club, namely Paul Pogba and Alexis Sanchez.
“I’m happy with the players, David [De Gea] is David, no need for more words,” Mourinho continued. A conclusion to negotiations is yet to be imminent, then.
Some of the most important news from Mourinho’s comments is that he has confirmed his desire to extend left-back Shaw’s time at the club.
His future looked to be hanging in the balance only a couple of months ago, but he’s had an excellent start to the season, being named the club’s Player of the Month for August.
“Luke Shaw‘s evolution makes us believe that he is going in the right direction – I want to keep him,” Mourinho confirmed.
“Juan Mata and Ander Herrera, even if they are not playing a lot or if they are not starting matches, by the character point of view and by what they represent in the modern society in football they are almost unique pieces that I also don’t want to lose.”
The United boss’ evaluation of Herrera and Mata is definitely correct. Both are role models for any young footballers in their attitude and work ethic. Although their playing time at the club may be diminishing, they remain good players to have around.
