Toby Alderweireld has opened up about receiving interest from Manchester United in the summer, insisting that a move away was never on his mind.
The Belgian encountered a dispute with Spurs over a new contract last season which coincided with him losing his place in Mauricio Pochettino’s team.
A summer departure felt firmly on the cards: Man United made enquiries for him early in the transfer window but balked at Spurs’ valuation before eventually turning to other options to no avail.
Speaking earlier this week, Alderweireld was quick to make clear that he never forced a move out of Tottenham, which explains why United emerged from the transfer window empty handed.
“Everyone was saying everywhere that I absolutely wanted to leave Tottenham,” he said
“That’s not true. This summer, I quickly understood Tottenham wanted to keep me. So, I had to battle to get my place back in the team. To be in the first team again is a victory for me.”
Alderweireld’s relationship with the club is clearly not as toxic as many imagined but the problem over his contract nonetheless remains.
He is no closer to striking a new deal with the club, which means United could take advantage of a clause in his contract that makes him available for just £25m next summer. Perhaps United, reluctant to pay £60m for Alderweireld in the summer, are playing the long game.
