“I will be the next, it’s going to happen and I will do it”.
Mason Mount’s promise to his father when he was warned about the prospect of joining Chelsea at such a young age showed the determination he has to break up the trend at Stamford Bridge.
The England youth international is Chelsea’s brightest prospect and is the latest to be tipped with a serious chance of breaking into the first-team picture at Stamford Bridge.
He’s a youngster that has been dealt plenty of promise and now on loan at Derby County, Mount is living up to the expectations, with rave reviews at club level and international recognition with the Three Lions believed to be imminent. Mount is showing just why he could be the next big thing at Chelsea.
From a young age, Mount has looked like a player way beyond his years. It tells you all you need to know about his potential that Chelsea spotted him at the age of six. He had previously shared his time training at Chelsea, Southampton and his beloved Pompey before committing to the Blues at the age of eight.
At a young he drew comparisons to Roy Keane for his willingness and hunger but has gone to develop into a much more of an attacking and creative prospect, leaning more towards his current boss at Derby County, Frank Lampard.
The comparisons to a young Lampard are hard to avoid. Whether it is the late, textbook ‘Lampard run’ into the box, the intelligence on the ball or the free-kicks from range, it is easy to see why Chelsea were so happy to send Mount on loan to Derby and see him learn from one of the greatest Premier League midfielders.
United Services Portsmouth were among the sides that Mount featured for as a kid, with his dad Tony keeping a watchful eye on his development as he helped out with the junior coaching at the club.
Bob Brady was the first-team manager of United Services Portsmouth FC when Mount arrived at the club as a youngster. He recalls the time the now England youth international spent at the club.
“At the time Mason played for US Portsmouth I was the first-team manager,” Brady explained to Read Chelsea. “It was always very pleasing for all at US Portsmouth FC when young, and in Mason’s place, a very young player gets signed by a professional football club!
It was a very proud moment for US Portsmouth when Mason signed for Chelsea, but to see what he has achieved so far in his career is testament to the talent that he showed as a youngster.
Mount remains proud of what he has achieved already at youth level, speaking fondly of his memories of the two FA Youth Cups he has won.
However, it was a loan spell at Vitesse which played a huge role in his development, just as Chelsea had hoped. The aim was for Mount to get first-team football, in a new culture, a different county and he thrived in the Eredivisie.
Chelsea were understandably delighted with the impact Mount had in the Eredivisie, but in the same vein, it came as no surprise to anyone at Stamford Bridge. However, it was at this point that people outside of the club began to take notice.
The technical aspect that dominates Dutch football suited Mount down to the ground. Guram Kashia, the club captain during Mount’s time in the Eredivisie, could not speak highly enough of the youngster, hailing him as one of the best loan signings they had made from Chelsea.
Jeroen Kapteijns, a reporter for De Telegraaf, gave a similarly glowing review when quizzed about him about the impact Mount had at Vitesse.
He was a true sensation. From all the players they got on loan from Chelsea, he was one of the few who really impressed a lot. He came as a boy he was very young. They were a bit afraid to put him in the team, he needed some time, it was a big step he had to take. In a few weeks, they saw his big potential. He came in and never went out again.
Towards the end of the season, he was the most important player of the team. He was the one player who could make a difference.
After recording an impressive 14 goals and 10 assists for the Dutch side, Mount was named Player of the Season for the club and returned to England for a spell at Frank Lampard’s Derby County.
Not many players can say they’ve earned their international debut at senior level before they have broken through at their club, but that looks like a serious possibility with Mount.
Gareth Southgate has never hidden his intention to bring through the next generation and he has taken quite the fancy to Chelsea’s young playmaker.
The England manager turned down the chance to watch Liverpool’s victory over PSG in the Champions League in order to travel to Pride Park and watch the player in action for Derby County.
Regular game time in the second tier is only going to improve his chances of both an England call-up and a breakthrough at Chelsea.
His chance may not happen next season, another loan spell away from the club could well follow his time at Derby, but there appears to be a plan in place.
The Blues are taking his development and progression very seriously, with everyone involved at the club fully aware of the potential he possesses.
