Luke Shaw has spoken effusively of David de Gea, describing the Spaniard as “the nicest and friendliest guy” off the pitch.
De Gea was voted the club’s best player for the fourth time in five seasons in May but endured a nightmare World Cup and a slow start to the 2018/19 campaign.
But his performance against Watford, during which he made vital saves in both halves, was a sign of the keeper – handed a place in the FIFPro ‘Team of the Year’ recently – getting back to his best.
Speaking to the club’s official website, Shaw described De Gea as not just a brilliant goalkeeper but also a fantastic person.
“Off the pitch as well he’s honestly the nicest guy and friendliest guy,” he said. “We all love him here and long may that continue him being here and making them amazing saves week in week out.”
At a time of so much infighting and chaos and general misery, it can be calming to think of De Gea.
De Gea has witnessed the entirety of the post-Ferguson era from between the sticks, his face a beacon of total emotionless calm, just making massive save after massive save.
United have lurched from crisis to crisis, sometimes performing well but usually under the microscope and eliciting big change to put things right. Thing have always felt panicky, frenzied, unpredictable.
De Gea, on the other hand, is an ocean of tranquility and distilled brilliance – completely at odds with the essence and sprit of this club in 2018.
Indeed, at times like these, we should be thankful for De Gea.
