Romelu Lukaku has made it clear that he does not care much for his goalscoring tally at the end of the season.
The Belgian became his country’s all-time top scorer last season and claimed 27 goals during his opening campaign at Old Trafford.
He has already netted four times for Manchester United this season, surpassing Didier Drogba’s Premier League total with his goal at Watford last weekend.
But Lukaku, speaking earlier this week, made it clear that his personal tally was secondary to his pursuit of trophies.
“You always compete every year against [Sergio] Aguero and [Harry] Kane, and [Mohamed] Salah this year,” he said.
“You always think about [the Golden Boot], being a striker. But then, while I want to score as much as I can, I want to win championships. That’s why I signed for Manchester United.”
Lukaku has enough goals. Of course, he will score many more down the years, but he already has more than most could ever dream of.
Only Sergio Aguero and Harry Kane, both playing for top Premier League clubs, have more goals than the Belgian in this division since 2012. No Belgian has scored more goals for his country. Nobody at Man United poses a greater goal-threat. Lukaku just seems to haemorrhage goals.
What he lacks, however, is trophies. His last piece of silverware? The Belgian division in 2010. For a player of his quality and potential, that is the main thing which has to change.
