Jose Mourinho emphasised the importance of building on Manchester United’s 2-0 lead at half time against Young Boys in the Champions League.
Two goals from Paul Pogba – the first a sweet strike from outside the box and the other a penalty – put Man United in charge at the Stade de Suisse.
It was the third time in a row United had gone into the break two goals to the good, although they had failed to add to their total against either Burnley or Watford.
Speaking after the game, Mourinho noted how he encouraged his teammates to go out and kill the game.
“At half-time, I told the players is the third time in a row that we arrive at half-time winning 2-0,” he said. “Against Burnley, we didn’t finish off but we didn’t concede, against Watford we concede and we were in trouble.”
“And today we could have more of that or go in the other direction. I think our best period was the period when we scored the third in the second-half and killed the game.”
For the first time this season, United’s second half was better than their first. They did not give Young Boys a real look at goal once whilst at the same time dominating the ball, with Paul Pogba feeding the attack and Anthony Martial, who was excellent, adding the side’s third following a flowing counter-attacking move.
Those 45 minutes felt like a watershed moment: United had run away with the game for the first time and Martial, whose last goal was in January, got on the scoresheet. Supporters will hope it is a sign of things to come.
