Manchester United were reportedly so intent on signing Atletico Madrid defender Diego Godin on transfer deadline day that the club reserved a time for a medical and also a private jet for the player.
That’s according to the Mirror who suggest that Man United were well prepared for the potential arrival of Godin, but an offer for the Uruguayan centre back was rejected.
Godin was one of a number of defenders that United targeted, alongside Leicester City’s Harry Maguire, Bayern Munich’s Jerome Boateng and Toby Alderweireld of Tottenham Hotspur.
After conceding seven goals in the opening three games of the Premier League season, it looked like Jose Mourinho was correct to demand a centre-back signing. United have struggled with their current crop of defenders, though the transfer window is now closed.
The Mirror state that Godin’s agent has approached United earlier in the transfer window to propose a potential move. However, the Uruguayan was pining for a new, bigger contract at Atleti, rather than a move to Manchester.
Before he signed that new deal, Godin looked like a possible bargain with a €20m release clause in his old deal.
It’s disappointing that Godin wasn’t a viable option on the end for United. The story is interesting, though, because it’s an insight into the life of a football club on deadline day. This may standard protocol for a transfer target; to have a jet ready and a medical timing scheduled.
