Peter Schmeichel believes Manchester United’s “inspirational” players will help the club recover from their difficult start to the season.
Consecutive defeats to Brighton and Hove Albion and Tottenham Hotspur have left Man United sitting in tenth position ahead of the international break.
A commanding 2-0 win against Burnley on Sunday, however, showed at the very least United’s capacity to attack well and hold firm at the back.
And Schmeichel believes the quality of players in that side will ensure Jose Mourinho’s men will kick on this season.
“We’ve got players now in the squad who are inspirational,” he said. “You want to go to Old Trafford and see these players.”
“It all just has to come together and it takes time. I’m like any other United fan, I want us to win everything but I’m also a realist.”
There may have been an uproar surrounding the lack of business done by the club over the summer, but the fact remains that United have a wealth of talent in their roster.
Paul Pogba, the World Cup winner, could get into any starting XI in the world. Romelu Lukaku is one of the best strikers in the world. Alexis Sanchez can be a game-changer. David de Gea is, of course, the best keeper on the planet. Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard all have the capacity to thrill.
The task for Mourinho, then, is to provide a platform for unleashing these players. After three summers he has struggled to do that often. He will know the clock is ticking in that respect.
This team needs to perform, to fulfil its potential. If Mourinho cannot unlock it, somebody else further down the line certainly will.
