Maurizio Sarri had rules Chelsea out of the Premier League title race, saying that they are not yet at the same level as either Liverpool or Manchester City.
As reported by Ian Baker of The Telegraph, Sarri thinks that his side are not yet ready to compete for the league title, despite winning their opening four games of the season.
He said:
At the moment, I can answer Manchester City or Liverpool [are the contenders]. We need another step, I think, to be at the same level.
Sarri went on to say whilst he is certainly hoping to be proven wrong, he thinks the likelihood of his side closing the gap on City is highly unlikely and that his aim is simply to improve his side, rather than chase the title.
I think that this season is too soon for Chelsea, but I hope not. It’s very difficult to close a gap of 30 points at the beginning of the season. To close that gap in only one season is very difficult. But I think also we need to improve, and we can improve.
Chelsea have a great chance to record a fifth straight win when they hose Cardiff City this weekend but even if they do have 15 points from the first five games, it looks like Sarri will not be totally convinced of his side’s title chances.
