Arsenal’s Europa League campaign started against Vorskla Poltava at the Emirates this evening.
Unai Emery has already won the competition three during his career and his attempt to win a fourth got off to a decent start.
The Gunners controlled possession early on, moving the ball well but failing to really create any clearcut opportunities.
That changed when Henrikh Mkhitaryan stole the ball on the edge of his own box and drove forward. He found Alex Iwobi who, in turn, slid it onto a plate for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to do what he does best.
After the break, Arsenal started to open up the match. Henrikh Mkhitaryan set one up each for Danny Welbeck and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang before substitute Mesut Ozil made it four.
Vorskla barely threatened the Arsenal goal but managed to steal Arsenal’s clean sheet late on. Volodymyr Chesnakov seized upon a lapse of concentration from Stephan Lichtsteiner to fire in a fine shot.
Vorskla pulled a second goal back in added time when Vyacheslav Sharpar powered home a fine strike from the edge of the box.
