Marouane Fellaini has insisted that Manchester United must be more energetic and work harder if they are to avoid throwing away points at Old Trafford in future.
The Reds were ahead against promoted side Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday afternoon thanks to a fine goal from summer signing Fred. Yet Wolves’ adventurous nature allowed them to get back into the game as Joao Moutinho levelled for Nuno’s visitors.
Fellaini has admitted that Man United need to press more and learn to control games.
“For sure, we are very disappointed,” Fellaini told MUTV, the club’s official television channel.
“But we have to do better. We have to press more, we have to be more energetic. We didn’t today. When you have a chance here, you have to score. We didn’t today.”
Fellaini’s analysis of the game is completely correct. United have regressed in to a terrible pattern of sitting back after taking the lead, whether at home at Old Trafford or away home home in the Premier League or in Europe.
Jose Mourinho’s side have got to kill games off. They dominated proceedings after scoring until half-time, but couldn’t score.
“It was a good goal,” Fellaini said of Fred’s opener for United. “We have to control better after that. They [Wolves] are a good team. They play football, they are dangerous. “
The Belgian midfielder was good on Saturday, particularly when playing in a deeper role. At the end, as usual, United threw him higher up the pitch to try and regain the lead. As usual, it didn’t work.
“We have to start again, we have a game Tuesday, we have to focus on this game and look forward,” Fellaini said.
