The Manchester United squad has reportedly sided with manager Jose Mourinho in the Portuguese’s power control war with midfielder Paul Pogba.
Mourinho stripped Pogba of the vice-captaincy on Tuesday after the Frenchman had made comments at the weekend indicating that Man United should change their style of play at Old Trafford.
Whether it was in direct response to that is not known, and Mourinho refuted claims that the pair have fallen out as a result of it on Tuesday night after United lost on penalties to Derby County in the League Cup Third Round.
However, United are in turmoil. Mourinho has not lost the dressing room though, according to The Times.
They suggest that a source from United has indicated that the players support Mourinho’s decision.
“José Mourinho told the players that Paul Pogba will not be the captain because he doesn’t represent what a captain is and Manchester United is bigger than anyone,” The Times said a source told them.
“The players were happy with that decision and the reasons behind the manager’s decision.”
Although Pogba is a fantastic player, his inconsistency, willingness to create controversy in public and lack of leadership on the pitch mean he does not suit the captaincy or vice-captaincy.
It’s positive that the rest of the United squad have sided with Mourinho. Whether it’s the correct decision or not is irrelevant in that matter, because United need the squad and manager to be relatively together if they’re to do anything this season, which looks unlikely.
