Senior Manchester United players have grown “angry” with Jose Mourinho’s man-management approach this season, according to ESPN‘s Mark Ogden.
The 55-year-old’s decision to strip Paul Pogba of the vice-captaincy has been received with bemusement by those within the dressing room.
His claim that he knew Man United were “in trouble” when Eric Bailly and Phil Jones stepped up to take penalties during their shootout defeat to Derby County last night has likewise infuriated Man United players, who are growing exasperated with Mourinho’s negative and critical style.
And according to Ogden, only a handful of United players are fully behind Mourinho at this point. The majority within the dressing believe the manager has lost his ability to cajole and relate to his players.
One source has claimed the atmosphere between Mourinho and his players has been poor ever since the club’s gloomy pre-season tour. The 55-year-old’s tendency to simultaneously pick fights with players and ask them to give everything for him is having an alienating effect on the team.
The knowledge that the club’s board remains fully behind Mourinho has engendered a feeling of helplessness in the United dressing room. Many will consider their futures in the summer should the situation fail to improve.
One United player, according to the same source, “has spoken of how he believes he has regressed at Old Trafford and failed to improve under Mourinho’s management, having credited previous coaches with taking his game to another level.”
