Manchester United are nowhere near being title contenders, claims Ryan Giggs

Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs doesn’t believe his former side are anywhere near challenging for the Premier League in the 2018/19 season.

When asked about who would be up there at the end of the campaign, Giggs didn’t even mention Man United, who he played for from the age of 14 until his retirement in 2014, more than two decades later.

Giggs went on to represent United as caretaker manager and then assistant manager to Louis van Gaal in a bad period for the club. That bad ‘transitional’ period has continued since Giggs left. The Welshman is now manager of his national team.

United sit some way behind the leading pack for the title already this season, after just six games. Liverpool and Chelsea have been in fine form as well as local rivals Manchester City. United, meanwhile, have won just a quarter of all their home games in all competitions this season.

“It looks like a case of Manchester City v Liverpool for the title, although you can’t dismiss Chelsea because they’re playing well,” Giggs said.

“Remember just two years ago they were the champions and they’ve got players in that dressing room who know what it takes – Liverpool haven’t got that, but you’ve got to start somewhere and Liverpool have been impressive.”

Giggs went on to praise Man City’s qualities. They are the champions and by far and away the most impressive of the English sides this season.

While Liverpool look good and Chelsea have had a positive start to the campaign under new boss Sarri, City are a different force and look likely to win a second consecutive title.

United, meanwhile, aren’t really in the frame at all and so it’s no surprise that Giggs would not mention Jose Mourinho’s side. At the moment, it looks far more likely that Mourinho’s men will be challenging for a top-four spot at best.
