Manchester United will go back in for Atletico Madrid defender Lucas Hernandez in the January transfer window.
The Reds reportedly targeted, and bid for, Hernandez in the summer window but were rejected by Atleti.
Hernandez, primarily a left-back for his club but a player who can also play in central defence, has risen in stature in the last couple of years.
His brother, Theo, recently made the controversial move across the city of Madrid to the Santiago Bernabéu.
Marca suggest that Man United remain interested in Lucas and made an €80 million offer in the summer. The Frenchman’s contract, signed in the summer, includes a release clause of that value, meaning Hernandez himself must have rejected an approach.
The Spanish newspaper indicate that Hernandez is happy in the capital and sees no reason to leave.
United will now reportedly make a second offer and tell Hernandez that they are willing to double his current salary at the Wanda Metropolitano if he moves to England.
A deal remains unlikely, though the fact that Hernandez’s contract includes a release clause helps somewhat. United have chased a number of French defenders plying their trade in La Liga, with Hernandez joined on that list by Barcelona’s Samuel Umtiti and Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane.
Manager Jose Mourinho is desperate for reinforcements in central defence, having failed to sign anyone in that position in summer despite efforts to do so.
United have started the season in poor form, losing half of their games thus far. Much of the blame for that lies with individual mistakes in central defence
