Paul Pogba returning to Juventus is ‘impossible’ according to Manchester United’s former-chief scout.
Javier Ribalta, who recently left his role as head of scouting at Old Trafford to become Director of Football at Zenit St. Petersburg in Russia, was asked whether the French midfielder could go back to the Allianz Stadium in Turin soon.
In conversation with Italian media, Ribalta said it seems an impossibility. The Spaniard worked at Juventus for five years between 2012 and 2017 and carries an enormous reputation.
Knowing the ins and outs of both United and Juventus, Ribalta was asked whether the Serie A champions could sign Pogba, Adrien Rabiot of Paris Saint-Germain of Marcelo of Real Madrid.
“Pogba, Rabiot or Marcelo for Juventus? I would say Marcelo, since the other two players seem impossible to sign,” Ribalta told tuttosport, an Italian outlet.
Marcelo has been linked with a move to the Old Lady in the last couple of weeks. That seems to be primarily because of Cristiano Ronaldo’s transfer from Real Madrid in the summer. The Portuguese was a great friend of Marcelo at the Bernabeu and having now been at Los Blancos for 11 years, it could be time to move on for a new challenge.
Ribalta’s comments on Pogba are interesting, though. It confirms what most people have reported and what most rational football fans think.
Pogba is of huge value to Manchester United. His value comes in three ways.
Firstly, Pogba has yet to play his best football consistently at United but has still been one of the Reds’ finest players in the last three seasons since he joined. An off-form Paul Pogba is better than most other central midfielders in the league.
Secondly, Pogba is of huge commercial value and in modern football, that’s important, particularly to someone like Ed Woodward, a former-account and banker turned Chief Executive of United.
But a third reason is that selling Pogba would be a statement for United. When they brought the Frenchman in from Juventus, it was a statement in itself. It was a sign that United were back, they had the money, they meant business, and they could get the very best players without UEFA Champions League football. Now, three years on, selling Pogba would be a negative statement, going against everything United proved when they signed him.
