Manchester United will “seriously consider” an offer of around £200 million for midfielder Paul Pogba if one comes in from La Liga side FC Barcelona.
The Independent report that while Man United have no active desire to sell the Frenchman, if Pogba indicates that he wishes to leave the club to join Barcelona, then they will not try to block his path stubbornly if an offer of the right amount comes in.
Miguel Delaney writes that “Pogba does want to go to Barcelona,” an unsurprising fact given his comments in the last few days and reported falling out with manager Jose Mourinho.
Players and staff at the Spanish club have already started their assault on United’s star player, with centre back Gerard Pique commenting that Pogba is a “great“ player and forward Luis Suarez praising him as well. The club’s vice president Jordi Mestre labelled him “a player of exceptional quality“.
These tactics have been seen before when Barcelona are chasing a player from English football and elsewhere, with then-Liverpool player Philippe Coutinho being constantly mentioned by Barcelona players and staff before he signed of them in January 2018 for a huge fee.
However, the Independent state two things that the United board require before they accept an offer. Pogba must make it ‘explicit’ to the club that he wishes to leave. Barcelona, meanwhile, must make a genuine offer and not mess around with any games in the media as they are currently doing and did with Coutinho.
The question for United fans is whether they think the board would be right to accept an offer of such value. The Reds brought Pogba back to Old Trafford in 2016 from Juventus for £89 million. It was a world record fee.
But since then, transfer fees have risen massively once more and five players have moved for more than £100 million. Neymar was the first, and Coutinho, Mbappe, Dembele and Ronaldo have followed.
United must demand at least double what they paid for Pogba, who could become one of the best midfielders in the world at Barcelona in a team where he would be one of many brilliant players rather than just one of two or three at United.
