Manchester United’s attacking players must do better if the Reds are to challenge for the Premier League title, manager Jose Mourinho has admitted.
The Portuguese started with Alexis Sanchez, Romelu Lukaku and Jesse Lingard in a front three, with Paul Pogba, Marouane Fellaini and Fred behind in a midfield three.
Pogba and Fred combined well for Man United’s only goal, in an impressive manner. But Lukaku was left isolated as Lingard and Sanchez drifted aimlessly across the frontline, contributing nothing and stopping United from having any structure.
Mourinho was unimpressed by the performance of the front three, all of whom were poor and ineffective against Wolves.
“I was expecting more from my attacking players,” Mourinho told BBC Sport. “There was not enough creativity, movement or dynamism.”
There are two sides to this argument. The players didn’t perform well enough. Sanchez has been poor since joining from Arsenal in January, and looks a shadow of the player who was the Gunners’ main man.
Lingard has had a couple of below-average showings in a row, and the supposed right-winger was constantly found floating to the left, crowding the space and making it even harder for Sanchez to play.
However, manager Mourinho must also do more. United appear to have very little attacking structure. Both Lingard and Sanchez constantly float inwards and wide when they feel it’s appropriate. Players are getting in each other’s way, there’s no obvious ‘style of play’ that United use to break down a ide over 90 minutes.
Both parties are to blame. Both parties must sort out United’s problems.
