Jose Mourinho has admitted that Manchester United deserved nothing more than a draw against Wolverhampton Wanders on Saturday.
The Reds went ahead in the first half thanks to Fred’s first goal for the club, but Joao Moutinho netted an equaliser shortly after half-time.
Man United were only worthy of a draw, and Mourinho readily accepted that after the game. His side could have killed the game off after taking the lead, dominating proceedings until the break. But they didn’t consolidate their lead, instead allowing Wolves to come back into the game.
“I think the result is fair,” Mourinho conceded, talking to BBC Sport.
“They deserved their point and we deserve the punishment of only getting one point. They started better and were more aggressive, had more intent and I don’t know why but they were more motivated.
“We made it quite easy for them to cope with our supremacy in last 20 minutes. Overall we don’t deserve more than this.
“Our performance was not consistent, not creative and not dynamic.
“The way we started we were lucky to be the first team to score. From a metal point of view their approach was more for a football match than ours.”
United have fallen into a pattern of allowing teams back into games by not pushing for goals after having an advantage.
In the second half, shots were few, creativity was little, and eventually United resorted to long balls to Marouane Fellaini alongside Romelu Lukaku.
It’s a constant issue that has to be sorted out. Complacency isn’t acceptable, particularly not if United want to mount a genuine title challenge.
