Manchester United summer signing Diogo Dalot will not start for the Reds against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday, manager Jose Mourinho has revealed.
The Portuguese full-back made an impressive debut for the club on Wednesday night as Man United dispatched of Swiss champions Young Boys 3-0 in the UEFA Champions League.
Dalot earned huge plaudits for his first showing in a United shirt, from his teammates, manager and from United fans, who have waited a number of months to finally see him in action.
He signed for around £19 million from FC Porto in summer with a pre-existing injury. Mourinho says that because of that, Dalot will not start on Saturday, but will be back for United in the next midweek game.
“It’s difficult enough for a 19-year-old kid to come from another country to play for Man United without accumulation of matches,” Mourinho said at his pre-match press conference on Friday morning.
“I want him in this process of adaptation to play totally fresh. So he’s not playing tomorrow, he plays Tuesday again, to play totally fresh.”
It’s sensible management of Dalot. Not only will it help keep him fresh, but after the hype around him has built following his debut, Dalot being out of the squad will allow that to calm down temporarily.
Young players can always suffer from the early hype around their careers, and it would be good if Dalot does not have to deal with unnecessary challenges.
