Harry Maguire has insisted Leicester City were unprepared to let him join Manchester United over the summer transfer window.
The defender enjoyed a superb World Cup campaign with England, performing with composure in a back three as Gareth Southgate’s men went to the semi-finals.
He received concrete interest from Man United, who spent most of the summer trying to sign a defender, but no deal ever showed signs of materialising.
And Maguire, speaking earlier this week, made it clear that the Foxes had no intention of letting him join a top side.
“Obviously going into a World Cup – if we were successful, as we were – there were always going to be players who came under interest,” he said. “That is part and parcel of the game.”
“I spoke with Leicester after a bit of interest from clubs, and they reiterated that I wasn’t for sale and I respected that decision.”
Leicester have a record of being able to hold on to big players. After all, it was only N’Golo Kante who immediately left after they won the Premier League title. Jamie Vardy is still there. Riyad Mahrez only left for pastures new this summer.
And they were in no hurry to let their best player of last season depart. Figures of around £70m were quoted in the media but, ultimately, Maguire’s decision to respect Leicester’s decision and not push for a move is what was decisive.
