Gary Neville does not believe Marcus Rashford‘s lack of starting opportunities at Manchester United is a problem but called on the youngster to establish himself in a position under Jose Mourinho.
The forward, who hasn’t started for Man United since the opening game of the season, scored his second England goal in as many games against Switzerland on Tuesday night.
Many pundits after the game called on Rashford to consider moving to another club if he is to fully realise his potential as a striker.
But Neville, speaking on Sky Sports, pointed out that minutes were not a problem for Rashford at this stage but made it clear he needed to nail down a particular position over the next year or so.
“He is a young player, so it’s not the end of the world when he comes in and out of the team and gets shifted positions,” he said.
“What he does have to do very quickly in the next 12 to 18 months is establish himself in one position and play 100 games in that position as quickly as possible. He plays left, he plays right, he plays centre forward and he comes off the bench and it’s difficult for him.
“He’s getting great experience and there is no doubt he’s had a great start to his career, but what he doesn’t want to do is fall into the category of someone who continues in that mould.”
Once again pundits were keen to point out Rashford’s lack of opportunities up front at Old Trafford following the win over Switzerland. The consensus seems to be that the youngster is not getting game time under Mourinho.
That is simply untrue. Rashford has over 150 appearances at the age of 20 and was Mourinho’s most capped player in his first season at the club. Only eight players managed more minutes than him last term.
Appearances are not the problem. Where Rashford plays, and in what context, are what we ought to be concerned with. He will not be satisfied with cameos on the left hand side for too much longer. The youngster, now in his third full season, has to convince Mourinho that he can offer something different – something the deal doesn’t already have – this year.
