England manager Gareth Southgate has revealed that Luke Shaw will miss Manchester United’s Premier League fixture against Watford.
The left-back could also be absent for the Reds’ first UEFA Champions League match of the season, in Group H against Swiss side Young Boys.
Shaw suffered concussion on Saturday night after an impressive performance for England against Spain in a 2-1 defeat. He provided an assist for England’s goal, scored by Man United teammate Marcus Rashford.
After a blistering start to the season in which he has already been named United’s Player of the Month for August, fans were concerned that Shaw would suffer another greatly unfortunate setback through injury. However, Southgate insists Shaw will be out for just a week.
“All being well, he has a mandatory six- or seven-day period [of not playing following concussion],” Southgate told reporters.
“But he should be back in [training] as soon as that is done.”
Shaw has already returned to United’s Carrington Aon Training Complex as he looks to recover as quickly as possible. On Tuesday he was receiving an assessment on the concussion to help in that recovery.
Although he’ll be allowed to play against Young Boys, it’s likely he’ll miss out due to the need to regain fitness.
Head injuries are now treated incredibly serious in football, and rightly so. After concussion, players are banned from playing for a certain amount of time to allow the brain to recover.
