Zinedine Zidane has pinpointed Atletico Madrid and France forward Antoine Griezmann as his number one transfer market should he take over at Manchester United, according to reports from Spain.
The club was on the verge of signing Griezmann in June 2016 but the Frenchman decided against a move to Manchester after Atletico’s transfer ban – which would have meant they couldn’t replace him until the following January – was upheld in court.
He has since committed his long term future to Atletico and Diego Simeone but continues to attract attention from top clubs including Man United.
And according to Spanish media outlet AS, Zidane, who remains the favourite to succeed Mourinho after leaving Real Madrid in the summer, has listed Griezmann as his primary target should he be handed the reins at Old Trafford in the near future.
Zidane has reportedly drawn up a list of several targets he wants at United. The Frenchman is said to admire the backing and independence in the market both Louis van Gaal and Mourinho have received from the club’s board compared to Real president Florentino Perez, who has a much closer grasp on transfer activity at the Bernabeu and refused to countenance a single major signing for Zidane in 2017.
This entire report, however, is based on the premise that Mourinho’s days at United are numbered following a poor start to the season. But United’s board, and especially Ed Woodward, remain supportive of the Portuguese at this early stage.
