Jose Mourinho branded Paul Pogba as an “anti-captain” in a meeting on Tuesday during which the Portuguese stripped him of the vice-captaincy.
Pogba criticised Manchester United’s playing style in the wake of the 1-1 draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers and was soon told by Mourinho that he would never captain the club again.
The pair’s tarnished relationship was on display for all to see in a frosty training ground dispute – over an Instagram story, would you believe – caught on video on Wednesday morning.
And according to Spanish media outlet Marca, Mourinho called Pogba an “anti-captain” and insisted he would never wear the armband for the club as long as he was manager.

Some reports have claimed that Mourinho dropped Pogba in-front of the entire group – presumably as a kind of power-move to reassert his authority. Others have claimed that it was done in a tete-a-tete meeting at Carrington on Tuesday.
Either way, Mourinho was clearly keen to play the entire affair down publicly after losing to Derby. Privately, though, he would have been livid. We could look at this episode as the beginning of the end for Mourinho: when your best player starts criticising your managerial methods, the writing is very much on the wall.
