Former Chelsea striker Diego Costa has labelled his move to the club as a mistake following the manner in which he left Stamford Bridge.
Speaking to Spanish outlet Marca, Costa spoke of his regret for the way in which his departure from Stamford Bridge was handled.
When quizzed on his time at the club, he spoke very highly about the supporters.
I don’t regret that experience as the Premier League is impressive. I wanted to play. Chelsea are also a big club. At that time, I needed to change. I’d done things very well and wanted to try something different. I was very happy at the club and with the fans, they had a great affection for me.
The Spanish international fell out with head coach Antonio Conte at the time and went AWOL as he pursued a move back to Atletico Madrid.
The former Chelsea boss reportedly informed Costa of his desire to move him during the transfer window via a text message, something that angered both the striker and the club.
Costa went onto explain that the situation could have been very difficult had something similar happened at Atletico because of the difference in the two managers.
It was a very bad moment but it wasn’t my fault. People said things, but time puts everything in its place. Look where the coach is, look at Conte. I was wrong going to Chelsea because of their way of dealing with things. Cholo [Simeone] is a direct coach, and when he doesn’t love you, it’s clear and he facilitates it. At Chelsea it was the opposite.
